REALITY CHECK

New Moon Press publishes educational materials that support the sustainable use of renewable resources, with an emphasis on coastal fisheries.

Most of our living renewable resources are held in “public trust,” which means in essence that they’re owned by everyone. And when everyone shares something valuable, there’s always somebody who thinks they’re entitled to more than anyone else.

The general public is thus being drawn increasingly into disputes over the harvest and allocation of these natural resources.

Historically, wildlife and fisheries were managed by scientifically trained experts within public agencies. Professional managers generally discourage the sequestering of our resources for use by fewer and fewer individuals. To attain their short-sighted goals, special interests therefore circumvent such knowledgeable individuals and appeal directly to politicians and the general public.

“Campaign rhetoric” is a euphemism for “propaganda” and is intended to mold public opinion. Mainstream media freely distribute the polished campaign rhetoric of elite special interests. Persistently delivered, such one-sided coverage can result in a false perception of reality that, in the context of the resource wars, translates into a general disapproval of the workers who in fact sustain their families and communities by harvesting renewable resources.

New Moon Press strives to balance such coverage with a collection of nonfiction books written by former seafood producer Robert Fritchey, who documents landmark disputes between the sport and commercial fishing industries.
